Saltash Town Council Announces Progress on Jubilee Pontoon Refurbishment
May. 2025
Saltash Town Council is pleased to confirm that essential refurbishment works have been completed on the Jubilee Pontoon, following significant weather-related damage that rendered the structure a health and safety concern.
Due to significant weather-related damage to the Jubilee Pontoon that caused urgent health and safety concerns, the Town Council resolved that immediate repairs were necessary to ensure the pontoon’s structural integrity. The refurbishment focused on the main body and finger pontoons, which are vital components of this valued community asset.
Saltash Town Council appointed Voyager Boatyard to complete the repair works, and phase one has now been successfully completed, taking vital steps to ensure the pontoon remains safe, functional, and accessible for many years to come. Footage documenting the initial stages of the project have been published on the Town Council’s website, providing transparency and insight into this significant undertaking.
“The refurbishment of the pontoon marks an important step in enhancing our town’s waterside infrastructure. It is a valued asset that serves both residents and visitors, and I am pleased to see it nearing completion. I look forward to the reinstatement of our partnership with Plymouth Boat Trips and to welcoming both returning and new users as the pontoon returns to service.”
– Outgoing Mayor Julia Peggs
Looking Ahead
The refurbished pontoon is scheduled to be returned to its location at the Waterside during the week commencing 19 May 2025, just in time for the Spring Bank Holiday.
This timing is ideal for welcoming back both longtime users and new visitors who wish to enjoy this cherished community space. Please note that all timings are approximate and subject to change due to weather and tidal conditions. As such, some flexibility in the project schedule may be necessary.
In addition, Saltash Town Council is delighted to announce the return of our valued transport partner, Plymouth Boat Trips, who will resume operations from the Jubilee Pontoon. Their return comes just in time for one of the area’s most anticipated events, the British Firework Championships, offering passengers the best seats in the house to experience this spectacular event from the water.
“We’re thrilled to be able to safely resume the Royal William Yard to Saltash ferry service, thanks to the swift and thorough works commissioned by Saltash Town Council. The new route, introduced last year, has been a really successful addition to our ferry network for locals and tourists alike. Ferry travel provides an enjoyable and more sustainable way to travel and with fantastic local events throughout the summer, including the British Fireworks Championships, we look forward to welcoming passengers back on board.”
– Ben Squire, Owner, Plymouth Boat Trips
Saltash Town Council remains committed to the stewardship and improvement of local amenities and looks forward to the positive impact this project will have on the town’s connectivity, tourism, and community spirit.
